Bronze Deity of Chandra - The Lord of the Moon
This famed Lunar deity carries lotus flowers and a pot of soma rasa, a heavenly beverage sought after by Gods and Rishis for its ability to give one immortality.
The Demigod Chandra also blesses mankind by nourishing plant life. He wears a crescent moon on his head, as does Lord Shiva, his respected senior.
This well-crafted Vedic deity boasts workmanship rarely seen in the present day.

Round Box For Carrying Items Used in Worship
This exciting piece could have a number of possible uses, but i prefer to accept the version of one expert that it was most likely used as a box belonging to a priest that would perform rituals in his locality and use the box to carry paraphernalia.
One suggestion was a container for keeping fresh chapatis hot prior to serving, and another was a lady's cosmetics box.
Due to being in excellent condition inside and out, I have taken the trouble of restoring the brass to its former luster.

Bronze Deity of Garuda - King of the Birds and Personal Carrier of Vishnu
This much loved personality features widely in the Vedic literature. Famous for carrying Lord Vishnu upon his back as He travels throughout both the spiritual and material realms. Seen all across India as a deity at the entrance to Vishnu temples, facing in towards the inner sanctum, and always in pranam mudra.
The fine craftsmanship is obvious from all sides of this piece.
Beautiful features and nice posture.

Water Pot with Spout
Also known as a ghindi, this fine South Indian utensil would have had many practical uses, both in the home or in temples.

Well made, heavy feel, with ornate mouth piece at the spout.

Large Arcaman Spoon Decorated with Lord Krishna
A most impressive example of an arcaman spoon, which would possibly be reserved for use at larger, public religious functions.
The arcaman spoon is used to sprinkle holy water upon items, thereby sanctifying them before finally offering them as a devotional sacrifice.
Every possible part of the spoon is decorated ornately with the grandest embellishment being Krishna, stood at the top of the handle.

Old Indian Brass Spittoon
With the chewing of pleasing herbs and spices being so popular in India, it would be quite normal for wealthier households to keep a spittoon. Some dealers may conceal the purpose of such an item, calling it a vase or urn, but my preference is to honestly present as much information as possible of each piece in the collection.
Regardless of its original purpose, its form is elegant while robust.

Arcaman Spoon
Although looking similar in many respects to a typical arcaman spoon, this excellent example is made from copper and the handle from brass.
This combination of metals is named 'Ganga-Jamuna' after the two holiest rivers of India that meet at Allahabad and flow together.
The brass represents the Ganges, and copper the Jamuna.

Rose Water Sprinkler
This stunning piece would be used to sprinkle rose-scented water on the ground, something done to freshen a place while preparing for a festive occasion.
The elegance of this piece is enhanced by its white colour.
This means the brass used contained a high proportion of zinc. A delicate design for a surprisingly robust object d'art.

Sri Rama' Body Stamp
This interesting tool would be dipped into a paste of either sandalwood or clay from the bed of a holy river. It would then be stamped on the body in specific places while chanting spiritual mantras. The purpose was to protect the individual by wearing the holy name of ones Lord.
This particular item uses a Bengali script and spells out 'Sri Rama'. Look closely to see the clay still in the corners.
Fine welding work with a high quality of brass.

Body Stamps Bearing Sacred Symbols
An intriguing set of South Indian body stamps.
The symbols represent the four iconic possessions of Vishnu, His lotus, conch-shell, club and fiery discus. These would typically be used by devout followers of Vishnu, some of whom would receive branding upon the arms at the time of becoming ordained.

Turtle Stand - Large
The turtle is a symbol of good luck in India.
Such stands are commonly used to support a shalagram, or a black stone found only in the Gandaki river of Nepal. Krishna was once cursed to become this particular stone, and some choose this as a way to worship Him.
A stand of this size would have been graced by a large shalagram or lingam; also a stone which is a recognized form of Shiva, found in the Narmada river.

Water Pot in 9 Metals
Although items of this purpose are plentiful, it is not common to find one made from 9 different metals! The result is gorgeous, especially when highly polished.
Some collectors are drawn to the patina of these old metals, but certain pieces deserve restoration! This is one such piece.
An octagonal spout in brass provides a clever touch of contrast.

Water Pot in Copper - Large
This hefty piece is of classic design, a functional vessel ideally suited to life in an ashram or daily temple ritual, where water would naturally always be stored in copper. However, even the simplest and most rugged of Indian design exudes artistic flair and perfect proportion.

Water Pot
This Mughal style decanter in a light coloured brass is beautifully decorated with an intricate leaf pattern around it's entire body.
The base also bears fine markings, and the neck, a number of interesting curves.
The lid is sadly missing and the spout has been repaired but with a lack of care that I'm sure would infuriate the original craftsman.
These imperfections become relatively minor when the item is viewed upon a shelf, where its fine form can be best appreciated.

Water Pot with Screw Lid
This pot was once a production piece in the not so distant past, and can be found in various sizes.
This piece is a medium size in the old range. Modern manufacture in brassware has seen a sharp slip in quality in recent decades, and this humble pot of yesteryear proves that they don't make 'em like they used to.
Brilliant screw top lid makes the pot perfect for use in Ayurvedic health treatments, massage oil, etc.
